Finds from our beloved FOUND archives
---
Twenty years ago, Davy Rothbart started FOUND Magazine as a way to share and celebrate lost letters, to-do lists, notes on napkins, Polaroid pictures, and other castoff scraps that reveal a glimpse into other people's lives. FOUND has been called “people-watching on paper... like mainlining the everyday world” (The Boston Globe) and "healthy voyeurism" (The New Yorker).
The finds in this collection, were discovered by people like you — tucked in books, stuck to shopping carts, languishing inside the drawers of abandoned furniture.
Though in previous issues, we did credit the finders by name, and provide larger context for where these notes were found, in this collection I'm presenting the finds on their own, largely stripped of their origins and (mostly) without names in the notes, due to the sensitive subject matter. Thank you for sharing your finds and contributing to the project. Finds are magic.
The content in this special edition contains finds touching on loneliness, depression, lost hope and suicide. But there are also glimpses of love and acceptance sprinkled throughout, and a little hand-drawn frowny face heart with big eyelashes. My best friend is not mommy — written on a microwavable lasagna top. I made this favorite into a glow-in-the-dark button (included).
Finds have always been there for me. Every dive into the archives is an adventure. I love opening the amazing mail we receive: Unfolding the paper, not knowing what will be on the other side, and then feeling immediately connected to a complete stranger. Always intriguing, mysterious, and sometimes tear-jerking. There is so much sadness in the world, so much disconnection; meanwhile, at the same time, we are all so deeply connected.
